One of the things people struggle with when it comes to jewelry is figuring out which category it comes from. The main categories of jewelry are fashion jewelry and fine jewelry. They might look similar but have distinct features that make them stand out. Knowing about them prior helps you make the right choice when buying jewelry. Here is everything you need to know about fashion jewelry and fine jewelry.

Fashion Jewelry

One way to describe fashion jewelry is pieces made from base metals and simulated stones that often imitate precious stones. These pieces can be made from metals like copper and brass or stones like plastic stones and Swarovski crystals. They can look like fine jewelry to the untrained eye but cost a fraction of what fine jewelry would cost. Most people who want to look good go for these stones because of the affordability aspect.

While fashion jewelry looks like fine jewelry, it tends to damage faster. Most users admit they have allergic reactions to fashion jewelry because of the low cost of materials used to make them. As such, it is not popular amongst the affluent in society.

One of the things most people do when it comes to fashion jewelry is applying a gold or silver coating to it so it does not damage the skin as much. Even with this, the pieces will fade and might still cause allergic reactions to the wearer.

The one perk of fashion jewelry is the affordability aspect. It can be easily made from imitation products to look like the expensive jewelry in the store. If pieces break off, they can be easily replaced. One does not have to worry about spending a dime on such repairs.

The only reason more people move away from it is the quality of the materials used to make the jewelry. The materials scratch easily, which makes them hard to use for a long time. The material can also discolor the skin and sometimes lead to a skin infection. Another disadvantage of these pieces is that they cannot be used long. As such, users will buy more pieces over time which is costlier in the long run.

Fine Jewelry

Fine jewelry comprises fine stones and precious metals like gold, platinum, silver, diamond, and sapphires. The materials are precious before being turned into jewelry, affecting the jewels' overall cost. The name comes from the fact that one who wears them is seen as someone who loves statement pieces. The jewelry is considered a lifetime and often passed down from generation to generation.

The one thing that stands out with fine pieces is how they can be custom-made to a client's needs. Rings can be melted and remodeled without losing the amazing features of the metal they were made from. If a precious stone comes off the piece, it can be put back with ease. The quality of the material means with a little care; the jewels will keep looking good as new for a while.

The major advantage of fine jewelry is the quality of the material. It is rare for one to get an allergic reaction to the pieces. The pieces are also timely and can be used for generations without losing their luster. Most family heirlooms are made from these precious metals. The surfaces do not scratch easily, so cleaning them up is easier.

The only con of fine jewelry is the cost. Compared to fashion jewelry, the price can go up over ten times. These pieces often mean that one has spent a gauge amount of their money on them just so they can look as good as they do. The cost also means storing it safely so it does not get lost. Care has to be taken so they do not get lost.
